One of the biggest reasons people choose WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) decking over natural timber is how little upkeep it needs. There is no annual sanding, oiling or sealing. That said, a few simple habits will keep your composite deck looking its best for decades. Here is everything you need to know.
Routine cleaning
The single most important thing you can do is keep the deck clear of debris. Leaves, soil and standing water can leave surface marks and, over time, encourage mould in shaded, damp corners.
- Sweep the deck regularly with a soft broom.
- Two or three times a year, wash it down with warm water, a little soap and a soft-bristle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it air-dry.
Dealing with stains and spills
Wipe up food, drink and oil spills promptly — the sooner you act, the easier they lift. For stubborn marks, use a dedicated composite-deck cleaner and follow the instructions. For grease, a degreaser made for composite surfaces works well. Always test any product on a small, hidden area first.
Mould, mildew and algae
In damp or shaded spots you may occasionally see a green or grey film. This is surface mould feeding on pollen and dirt — not the board itself. A composite deck cleaner and a soft brush will remove it. Improving drainage and airflow under and around the deck helps stop it coming back.
What to avoid
- Harsh solvents, bleach and acetone — they can dull the finish.
- Metal shovels or wire brushes that scratch the surface.
- Pressure-washing on a high setting or too close to the board. If you must pressure-wash, keep it low-pressure, at a distance, fanning along the board.
Through the seasons
In the rainy season, clear gutters and make sure water drains away from the deck rather than pooling on it. In the dry, dusty months, a quick sweep keeps grit from being ground into the surface. Because our boards are UV-stable, you will not need to re-stain them to fight fading.
That really is it
No sanding. No staining. No sealing. A little routine care is all a WPC deck asks for in return for years of good looks.
